Gallery Trail
Jan 20th, 2010 at 1:53pm

We are looking at the idea of creating a gallery trail within Billingshurst, much like the highly successful Arundel Gallery Trail held every year in August.

The aim is to promote the work of local artists many of whom can obtain space on the front pages of this site similar to those already on line at http://www.arun-forum.org.uk/Artists/alexander/

We would welcome any comments and suggestion as to how this could be set up, who would be interested and especially from any shops in the area who would welcome the idea of displaying work in their premises during the 2 weeks of the even.    Similar events are already planned for Littlehampton and Bognor Regis

depends what you consider art? I'm not familiar with the arundal art trail? Is it displaying art in all the shop windows to create one big gallery?

If photographic art is allowed I have some that I think would be considered a possibility. I have some local stuff and other arty type shots that I've taken further afield. Not considered myself an artist although I did sell one photo for the price of a cooked dinner.  Grin

The Arundel Art trail is a great concept which I have visited more than once with a friend.  I cannot see how it would work here but would make sense if instead of art being shown in people's houses as it is in Arundel, if the local halls were used and shop windows, perhaps even the churches to display the different artists work.

In Arundel there are photographers, painters, ceramics, bronzes, jewellery designers etc.  Really a vast cross section of the art world.  Most of the work on display is there to be purchased, and the wonderful experience of seeing art in home settings, gardens etc. We visited the kitchen of one home belonging to a photographer and displayed were the most wonderful photographs of village people, in Africa, that she visits every year. There is also a variety of stalls in the centre and the roads are closed to traffic, live music and it gets incredibly busy. Lots of places to eat and drink, too.  Great atmosphere.

LR some of your photographs displayed on the forum have been really good, so go for it.  Smiley

The displaying of local Artist’s work at the Village Hall is something that we (Village Hall Management Committee) considered a couple of years ago but never organized due to the lack of someone who could or would pull the project together.  Given that we are in the final stages of a £40,000 upgrade of facilities (IT in all meeting rooms and Audio and Lighting for the stage and back stage area) and are therefore looking at a “relaunch” this idea may be worth revisiting!  If there is anyone who is interested in leading such an initiative please contact me.  PP

I think a Gallery Trail needs to be held every year starting this year which may be low key due to lack of time to get enough people organised.   But it also has to be of benefit to the community as a whole - so yes the plan was to ask shop keepers and local businesses to get involved.

As to what we call art - everything that Arundel does can be done in Billingshurst and no reason why the front part of this soite which many of you probabkly dont know exists could be used to feature those involved.   Lots of work for me - but bring it on - I have set up prices for sub web sites for peoplw so they are affordable and just about cover the extra costs of hosting.   Im trying to do as much as I can free, but at the same time being careful that what I do doesnt actually cost me, so very much open to negotiation

The main pages are at http://www.billingshurst-forum.org.uk sop please do go see what we are talking about.

I understand there is an Arts Group in Billingshurst but have yet to make contact with them

The only downside I see of using the village hall, well, exclusively, is that many will simply not go in there. I've lived here 4 years and only ever been in there to vote.... now that is a great time to publicise local projects etc, catch people while they queue.

Anyhiow, use the village hall by all means, but think if you involve the shops as planned, you get far more impact and interest.

I'll certainly  offer some photography if I know where and when and sizes etc.

An art trail similar to the Arundel Art Trail is an excellent idea.  I contributed artwork last year on the Arundel trail and would definitely support one in Billingshurst.  Please let me know further details if you are successful in setting one up.

Looks like we have a few more interested players in this idea.  We are planning on discussing the issue in more details with the BCP inMarch

But in the meantime take a look at www.hampshireartists.org.uk

Billingshurst is  more than capable of doing something very similar and are own artists can produce pdfs similar to those used in Hampshire..

Have yet to hear from any of the shops but we are aklso looking into the idea of getting the youngsters involved with a graphitee area in Jengers Mead.   It would be great if there was a late nite cafe open at the same time.   I like the idea of using empty shop windows and perhaps the possiblity of opening any vacant properties up for weekend viewing of art work

Ok this need to be revamped and started - Long Ranger yes photographs too - Are there still empty shops in jengers mead ?

What about hordings around any building sites where we could get the teenagers to do organised graphite ( is that spelt right?)

Village Hall yes - but pubs were used in Littlehampton this year with some great results.   Several artists made a fair bit on exhibiting their work.   We could expand the idea and include Wisborough Green and have arts on the railings at the Station Road Gardens assuming there are railings that are taken down each day

Check out http://www.artstudio-littlehampton.co.uk/whatson.php to see how Littlehamptons artists are using the harbour Park - all ages too from teenagers to 80 year old James Morrison shown in the first picture

Chas,

For your information, there are some empy shops in Jengers mead, as are there a whole row of about 5 empty ones n the high street. As for the late night cafe idea mentioned, next to the row of 5 empty shops is a newly opened cafe. Perhaps they might be interested in getting on board, displaying some art and maybe opening up late for a week. Let's face it, if you were the owner of the cafe, you could see this as a good chance to get people aware of your new cafe, get some boost in sales and hope that you impress enough to get some repeat sales after the art has gone.

If you were to use the village hall in the plans then in the high street at the roundabout where the village hall is (not sure how familiar you are with Billi) there is a building site boarded up with ply board. Perhaps contact the owners and see if the wall of ply can be transformed in to art work. They might want it painted back to how it is now after the event, but I'm sure the arrangements could be made.

I know worthing and littlehampton have been doing well with their own artists trail and of course the arundel one is always a huge atraction.

The hording could we'll be a wonderful space for the teenagers this year especially as the school's due the break for holidays pretty soon
