The first meeting of the Council's Allotments Committee will be on Wednesday 09 December 2009 at 7.30pm at Billingshurst Village Hall.

The Council is considering forming an Allotments Society and will be seeking volunteers who would like an allotment in Billingshurst to join the Society.

Members of the public are welcome to attend the meeting.

Unfortunately, I'm not sure I'll make it, but will try to come if my 5 week old allows it!

I do hope the people interested will attend or the council might think no-one is that interested and shelve it  Undecided

Congratulations to all those that turned out last night for the inaugral BPC meeting of the Allottments committee. In all there were about 22 members of the public attending. A good turnout. We had a good informative meeting with the council and, I think, they will move things on quite swiftly.

Date for your diaries: Monday 25th Januray 2010, 7.30pm, Billingshurst Village Hall, Inaugral meeting to form and elect a committee for the "Billingshurst Allottment Society" (if that is what the members agree to call it).

Please make contact with CarlW if you wish to be included on a mailing list and be a prospective allottmenteer. Lots to discuss and decide upon at this meeting, be there to make your views felt.

I hope all goes well for you Carl, I know you have worked hard for this opportunity.  Good luck.   Smiley

Looking at the Agenda for Property on Wednesday, it is possible that as well as working on the allotments the allotment holders will be able, in their tea breaks, to have a go on the suggested skate park if it is installed at Manor fields.  Grin

It was very encouraging to have such a good turnout at the meeting to set up an allotment society and also that everyone was so enthusiastic. Smiley

However I was very disappointed to hear at the meeting  that a skate park is proposed for  NEXT to the proposed allotment site. Not sure where this suggestion came from as it was not mentioned when the allotments were first discussed .
Sadly, after a vote,  it was a unanimous decision of ALL those present last evening that skate parks and allotments do not go together and if the skate park goes ahead then it is highly probable that there will be no further interest in the allotments on that particular site. A new site will be sought.

I am sure Carl will write more but I am personally both shocked and disappointed by such an ill thought and unrealistic proposal.  Angry

It was discussed at last week's Property meeting, enthusiatically by some.  However, Mr Bockling of the older People's Council (and apologies to him if I have the title wrong) said it was an ill thought out idea; youngsters and allotments won't mix.

The lady in favour of the idea said that those wanting allotments had been asked where they wanted them, so the same should be afforded to the young.

One councillor before leaving the previous meeting (Full council) said that having a skate park and Osmund Court (elderly residents) didn't seem a good idea either.

I am sorry for Carl who I believe would make the allotments work well.   Sad

I too feel disappointed for Carl as I know he has put a tremendous effort into getting this scheme off the ground.

Anyone who prints and delivers nearly 1000 flyers at their own expense  should certainly be supported.

The PC have been very supportive so far and I hope they will continue to be so by throwing out this suggestion of a skate park in that particular venue.  Sad

It is not strictly true that those wanting allotments were asked where they wanted them. That was discussed by the group of councillors set up to discuss the request and the proposal of Manor Fields was then made for many reasons.

I've only just caught up with the newly proposed addition to the allotments in the form of a skate park.  It does seem a very odd mix, and not a welcome one for either allotmenteers or skateboarders I would have thought.

However, how has the skate park plan come about ?  Is it thought that the current skate park is being used beyond it's capacity ?  This can't be the case as every time I pass by, which is frequently, there are never more than a few users if any at all and I've never seen anyone actually skating, just' hanging out' as youngsters like to do.

Is the idea to move the current facilities, which would cost a considerable amount or, perhaps, to add on additional facilities and so maintain 2 sites?

If it is to move the site then wouldn't it be better placed somewhere over in Jubilee Fields with the other 'sporting' facilities and where there are far more activities for youngsters plus toilet facilities when the pavilion is open ?  Or, if to have a bigger facility, would it not be cheaper to make the current park bigger ?

Either way it seems an astonishing suggestion, what is the next step for it as a proposal ?

Hi Roobarb

Last year at a Property meeting around 30 youngsters came to ask for a new skatepark facility.  They considered that the old park was unsafe, a point disputed as it is inspected regularly.  The new facility they want is made of marine ply, supposedly quieter than the one in Natts Lane and they had seen what they wanted in Southwater.  Cost is around £50,000, so the meeting was told.

For the reasoning behind Manor fields you would be better off going onto the Parish Council Website and checking out the draft minutes of the Property committee 20 January.
