Religion is a mightily difficult subject to discuss in that it usually does not take long for someone to play the 'offence' card. It is criticism of religion and matters of faith which uniquely, I think, causes this response. Criticism of another's views on other aspects of human invention and imagination such as politics, art and literature rarely, if ever, cause those on the receiving end of the criticism, to claim they are offended.

As for lack of appreciation and understanding of other people's beliefs, then I'm not sure that believers in, and sympathisers of, religion are able to give lectures on tolerance and respect to anyone. Burn the Koran Day, which is being promoted in a church in Florida and was featured on tonight's Channel 4 News is a case in point. Furthermore, Barack Obama is under a lot of pressure in the States to demonstrate that he is a commited Christian and not a Muslim. An atheist in America by the way would and could probably never stand for high public office - you would be better off as a Muslim.

Oliver 2 wrote on Aug 26th, 2010 at 12:01pm:

Whilst not religious I do find the more spiritual, philosophical and thoughtful aspects of some religions a welcome break from the materialism and shallowness of our modern world.

Religion does not necessarily imply a philosophical and thoughtful disposition - quite the opposite: it often stands for unquestioned belief and faith in bronze age middle eastern thinking and attitudes.

General Board - Billinghurst Primary School - Please Read

Seems like the school is still a little disorganised. Noone to open the gates at pickup time today and 150 parents waiting for their kids! Plus they changed all the class names in Yr2.

Bit disappointing that the communication from the school and its new head has been limited to say the least.

Anyone else have similar stories?

General Board - Parking & Shops

Having read through most of the “overview & scrutiny” committee reviews on HDC’s website. Looked at their transport/car parking links, and gone through every link on the site, we can find no statement, various or otherwise from HDC with an agenda item for the purchase of Jengers Mead or Jengers Mead car park, which we are told is on their website.

Knowing HDC’s policy on openness and transparency we also checked their minutes for any reference to Jengers Mead/& car park, and no luck.

Several mentions from 2003 & 2005 but nothing more recent. Even digging a lot, we can see nothing to this effect. There are many on this forum that are brilliant at this sort of thing; if you can find it we are certain that it will be of interest to all Billingshurst residents, would you please put the link on here.

(Or send it in an Imail to me if you prefer. Thank you)
